Hanna uses colour as a form of self expression. As a student she was fascinated by and often studied the American Expressionist movement of the 1940's and 50's. In particular, she takes inspiration from the founders in Rothko, Klee, Kandinsky and de Kooning. Their style, often characterised by gestural brush-strokes or mark-making, and the impression of spontaneity resonates with Hanna so too their use of colour to express emotion.
The Abstract Expressionist were committed to expressions of profound emotion and universal themes that fitted the post-war mood of anxiety and trauma. It was the first specifically American movement to achieve international influence and put New York City at the center of the western art world, a role formerly filled by Paris.
